How to play Street Brawl

Street Brawl is a free side-scrolling beat-'em-up you can play in your browser on a computer, tablet or phone — no download and no account. Walk along a sunny city street and clear it of goons, block by block. When a wave of them turns up, the screen holds still until every one is down; then a "GO" arrow sends you on to the next block. Clear the last block to finish the level.

Controls

On a keyboard, walk with the arrow keys or W, A, S and D — up and down move you across the pavement, so you can line up with a goon or step out of the way. Press J to punch, K to kick and Space (or L) to jump. Press P or Esc to pause, M for sound and N for music. On a phone or tablet, use the buttons under the screen.

Fighting

• Punch three times in a row and the third is a hook that knocks a goon off his feet.
• Kicks are slower but reach further, and always knock a goon down.
• Jump and kick for a super kick: you fly forward feet first, hit almost twice as hard, and floor every goon in your path — one per jump.
• Jump over a swing — a goon's punch passes under you while you are high in the air.
• A goon goes down for good after one super kick, two kicks or three punches — or any mix of them.
• Super goons glow gold and take twice as much: two super kicks, four kicks or six punches. They are worth double.
• Watch for the "!" over a goon's head — he is winding up to swing. Hit him first, or step up or down out of line.
• Only two goons wind up at a time, so even a crowd takes turns.

Goons, crates and lives

• Thugs are the all-rounders. 100 points.
• Runners join from level 2: quick, with a long kick, but easy to knock over. 150 points.
• Bruisers join from level 2 too: slow, with a big punch, and a jab does not stagger them — but a hook or a kick still floors them. 300 points, and one waits at the end of every level from then on.

Smash the wooden crates along the street for an apple (+30 health) or a bag of coins (+500). You have 100 health and three lives; losing a life knocks the goons around you off their feet and gives you a moment to recover. Clearing a level scores a bonus for the level, the health you have left and your speed. Your best score is remembered in this browser on this device only.
