A free unit converter for everyday measurements
This free unit converter changes a measurement from one unit to another as you type: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, cooking measurements and digital storage. Choose what you are converting, pick the units, and enter a number — the answer appears straight away, with the full list of equivalent units underneath. It works in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer, needs no sign-up, and does every calculation on your own device, so it keeps working even if your connection drops.
What you can convert
- Length: millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles.
- Weight: milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons, ounces, pounds, stone and US short tons.
- Temperature: Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin.
- Area: square millimeters to square miles, plus acres and hectares.
- Volume: milliliters, liters, cubic centimeters, meters, inches and feet, and US fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts and gallons.
- Cooking: teaspoons, tablespoons, US fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, gallons, milliliters and liters.
- Data: bits and bytes, kilobytes to terabytes, and kibibytes to tebibytes.
Conversions use the exact legal definitions where they exist: an inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, and a US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 liters). Results are rounded to six significant figures so they are easy to read, and a more precise figure is shown whenever the rounding hides something.
US cups and gallons are not UK pints and gallons
The cups, pints, quarts, gallons and fluid ounces here are US customary measures. The UK Imperial gallon is about 20% larger (4.546 liters against 3.785), and an Imperial pint is 20 Imperial fluid ounces rather than 16 US ones, so a British recipe or fuel figure will not match a US one.
A cup is a volume, not a weight
Cooking measures convert between each other exactly — 1 tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, 1 cup is 16 tablespoons or about 236.6 milliliters. But a cup cannot be turned into grams on its own, because the answer depends on the ingredient: a cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of sugar or honey. That is why the cooking converter does not offer grams.
Bits and bytes, GB and GiB
A lowercase b means bits and an uppercase B means bytes, and 8 bits make 1 byte — so a 100 Mb (megabit) internet connection moves about 12.5 MB (megabytes) a second. Storage also comes in two scales. Kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes go up in thousands, which is how drives are sold; kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes and tebibytes go up in steps of 1,024, which is how many operating systems count. That is why a 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GiB.
Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin
Temperature scales have different zero points, so they are converted with formulas rather than a single factor: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and K = °C + 273.15. Water freezes at 32 °F, 0 °C and 273.15 K, and −40 is the same in Fahrenheit and Celsius. Nothing can be colder than absolute zero — 0 K, −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F — so the converter says so rather than showing an impossible temperature.
Frequently asked questions
How many feet are in a meter?
One meter is about 3.28084 feet, and one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. For example, 68 °F is 20 °C.
How many milliliters are in a cup?
One US cup is about 236.6 milliliters.
